In the world of acting, your headshot is your calling card. It’s the first impression casting directors have of you, and it can make all the difference in landing auditions and roles. While your expression and demeanor are crucial, your wardrobe plays a significant role in conveying your personality and casting potential. So, if you’re searching for tips on how to find your signature look for your headshot session, we’ve got you covered!

As photographers, we want you to communicate what you like/dislike and what you are comfortable with. Creating a comfortable environment is what we aim for. And definitely bring your ideas to us, whether that’s a mood board, Pinterest photos, magazine cutouts, etc.  Because we love to see your creativity and your input. In fact, the more personal, the better for the end result.

First,

consider your casting type and the roles you typically audition for. You can plan to have some wardrobe changes to show your acting range, whether that’s the girl-next-door, the edgy rebel, or the sophisticated professional. Without going overboard, align your wardrobe with your desired casting types while still reflecting your individuality.

Choose clothing that enhances your features and complements your skin tone, avoiding busy patterns or overly distracting accessories. The same goes for makeup (and we can recommend very good makeup artists who we work with on a regular basis). As your photographer, we know how to use light to your advantage. Beyond that, any minor can be improved with a bit of retouching.

Next, think about the color palette that best suits you. Solids are generally better than busy patterns. Don’t be afraid of color. Just be sure it complements and enhances your complexion and the shade of your eyes, while also expressing your personality. Oh, and don’t forget to pay attention to fit and silhouette. Obviously, you want to flatter your natural assets. Avoid clothing with logos or graphics that could date your headshot and distract from your face. YOU’RE the center of attention here!

Make sure your shoes fit well and are comfortable for you to stand and move effortlessly for the duration of the shoot.

Last, simplicity is key. Your wardrobe should complement, not overpower, your face and expression. Ultimately, you want your headshot to capture the essence of who you are as an actor, so choose clothing that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and authentically you. With the right wardrobe choices, you can showcase your versatility and leave a lasting impression on casting directors. If you want to consult a stylist to help you find your signature look, we highly recommend our buddy, master stylist Guy Tomlinson. Here’s some of his work on IG.
