AI can now produce a professional-looking headshot in minutes. The lighting is polished, the background is clean, the clothing looks appropriate, and the person in the image can look remarkably like the person who uploaded the original photo. And yet, sometimes something feels off. It may be difficult to explain. The image looks right, but it doesn’t quite feel like you.

Looking Like You Isn’t the Same as Feeling Like You
An AI headshot can reproduce recognizable features remarkably well. But a professional portrait is about more than getting the face right. Expression, posture, eye contact, the way someone carries themselves, and the small variations that make a person feel present can all affect how an image comes across. You can recognize yourself in a photograph without feeling represented by it.
Perfect Can Be a Little Strange
One reason AI-generated portraits can feel unusual is that they often aim for an idea of perfection. Perfect lighting. Perfect skin. Perfect hair. Perfectly arranged clothing. None of those things are necessarily bad. But when every element has been smoothed into place, some of the personality can disappear with it. Real people aren’t perfectly symmetrical, perfectly posed, or permanently camera-ready. Those imperfections can actually be part of what makes a portrait believable.
Your Expression Carries More Than Your Face
Think about the difference between someone smiling because they are happy and someone smiling because they’ve been asked to smile. The difference can be subtle, but you can often feel it immediately.
A portrait session allows for those subtle shifts. A photographer can respond to the person in front of the camera, make adjustments, have a conversation, and recognize when an expression feels natural rather than simply technically correct. That’s difficult to reproduce when the image is being generated from a prompt.

Context Can Matter, Too
Not every professional portrait needs a blank background. For some people, where they work is part of how they present themselves. An architect might want the space around them to say something. An executive might want a portrait that feels connected to the organization they lead. A creative professional might need something less conventional.
AI can create almost any setting imaginable. But creating a convincing background isn’t necessarily the same as creating your environment.
AI Isn’t the Problem
There are plenty of situations where an AI-generated image can be useful. It can be quick, accessible, and remarkably sophisticated. The question is what you need the image to accomplish. If you simply need a polished picture of yourself, AI may be enough.
If the photograph is introducing you to potential clients, colleagues, customers, investors, or the public, you may want something more specific: an image that doesn’t just resemble you, but actually communicates something about who you are.

The Difference Can Be Small
The interesting thing about an AI headshot that feels wrong is that it may not look wrong at all. There may be no obvious giveaway. Someone looking at it might even say, “That looks great.” But you might still hesitate before using it. That hesitation is worth paying attention to.
